(Reuters) Guilty on all counts, Donald Trump becomes first US president convicted of a crime

• Donald Trump became the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime on Thursday when a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star ahead of the 2016 election.
• After two days of deliberation, the 12-member jury pronounced Trump guilty on all 34 counts he faced.
• Trump faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison, though others convicted of that crime often receive shorter sentences, fines or probation. Incarceration would not prevent him from campaigning, or taking office if he were to win.

(Reuters) Ukraine says Russia building up forces near Kharkiv region's north

• Russia is building up forces near the northern part of Ukraine's Kharkiv region where it launched an offensive this month, but it still lacks the troop numbers to stage a major push in the area, Ukraine's top commander said on Thursday.
• Ukraine says it has stabilised the front in the northeastern Kharkiv region where Russian forces launched a cross-border assault on May 10 that opened a new front in the 27-month-old war and stretched Kyiv's outnumbered troops.
• Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said Russia was continuing to send additional regiments and brigades from other areas and from training grounds to bulk up its troops on two main lines of attack in Kharkiv region's north.

(CNN) Biden gives Ukraine permission to carry out limited strikes within Russia using US weapons

• President Joe Biden has given permission to Ukraine to strike inside Russian territory with American munitions, though he has restricted their use so Kyiv can only hit targets over the border close to Kharkiv after Russia made significant advances around the city in the northeastern part of the country close to the Russian border, two US officials told CNN.
• “The president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use US supplied-weapons for counterfire purposes in Kharkiv so Ukraine can hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them,” one of the officials said.
• The loosening of the restrictions marks a break from long-standing policy and comes amid growing international pressure from close US allies. But it is limited to the area around Kharkiv, and Ukraine has not requested permission beyond that, the official said, adding that they do not anticipate the US widening the area allowed.

(Reuters) Israel seizes Gaza's entire border with Egypt, presses with raids into Rafah

• Israeli forces have taken control of a buffer zone along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, the country's military said on Wednesday, giving Israel effective authority over the Palestinian territory's entire land border.
• Israel also continued deadly raids on Rafah in southern Gaza despite an order from the International Court of Justice to end attacks on the city, where half of Gaza's 2.3 million people had previously taken refuge.

(Reuters) Early results in South Africa's election show ANC losing majority

• The African National Congress appeared on course to lose the parliamentary majority it has held for 30 years, partial results from South Africa's national election showed, in what would be the most dramatic political shift since the end of apartheid.
• With results in from 41.2% of polling stations, the ANC's share of the vote in Wednesday's election stood at 42.7%, with the pro-business Democratic Alliance (DA) on 23.6% and the Marxist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on 9.5%, data from the electoral commission showed.
• If the final results were to resemble the early picture, the ANC would be forced to make a deal with one or more other parties to govern - a situation that could lead to unprecedented political volatility in the coming weeks or months.

(Reuters) ‘Hong Kong 47’ trial: 14 democrats found guilty in landmark subversion case

• Fourteen Hong Kong pro-democracy activists were found guilty and two were acquitted on Thursday in a landmark subversion trial that critics say could deal another blow to the city's rule of law and its reputation as a global financial hub.
• The verdicts in Hong Kong's biggest trial against the democratic opposition come more than three years after police arrested 47 democrats in dawn raids at homes across the city. They were charged with conspiracy to commit subversion under a national security law imposed by China.
• Sentencing will come at a later date for those found guilty, with prison terms ranging from three years to life for this offence. Thirty-one defendants pleaded guilty, and four of them have become prosecution witnesses.

(Reuters) Governor of Russian 'oil capital' region criticised for war comments resigns

• Natalia Komarova, the governor of Siberia's oil-rich Khanty-Mansiisk region who was last year criticised for remarks she made about the war in Ukraine, announced on Thursday that she was resigning from her post.
• In a video posted on her official Telegram channel, Komarova, who oversaw a region which accounts for more than 40% of Russia's total oil output, said she was moving to another undisclosed job even though her term in office does not expire until next year.
• Hours later, the Kremlin released video of President Vladimir Putin meeting Ruslan Kukharuk, the mayor of the city of Tyumen, and offering him Komarova's job.
