Israele-Libano:

(Reuters) Hezbollah vows to punish Israel after pager explosions across Lebanon

  • Militant group Hezbollah promised to retaliate against Israel after accusing it of detonating pagers across Lebanon on Tuesday, killing at least eight people and wounding nearly 3,000 others who included fighters and Iran's envoy to Beirut.
  • Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makary condemned the late afternoon detonation of the pagers [...] as an "Israeli aggression". [...] The Israeli military [...] declined to respond to questions about the detonations.
  • The pagers exploded in southern Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut known as Dahiyeh and the eastern Bekaa Valley - all Hezbollah strongholds.
  • A Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the detonation of the pagers was the "biggest security breach" for the group in nearly a year of conflict with Israel.
  • The U.S. State Department said it was too early to say how the pager attacks in Lebanon might impact efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
  • It urged Iran -- which with its allies Hezbollah, Yemen's Houthis and armed groups in Iraq has formed an "Axis of Resistance" against Israeli and U.S. influence -- not to take advantage of any incident to raise instability.

(The Kyiv Independent) Italy to deliver promised SAMP/T air defense system by end of September

  • Italy will deliver a second SAMP/T air defense battery to Ukraine by the end of September, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said on Sept. 17.
  • Italy promised in June to send Kyiv another SAMP/T system, the only European-made air defense system that can intercept ballistic missiles.
  • "By the end of the month the new Samp/T system will be delivered to Ukraine, and we know how much every minute of delay costs," Crosetto said at a conference on European air defense production, according to the Italian media outlet RAI.
  • Ukraine's need for advanced air defense systems has become more urgent in light of Iran's recent transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia.
  • Italian media has also reported that Italy's next military aid package will include a batch of long-range Storm Shadow missiles along with the SAMP/T system, but officials have not confirmed these reports.

Russia

(BBC) Facebook owner bans Russian state media networks

  • Facebook owner Meta says it is banning several Russian state media networks, alleging they use deceptive tactics to conduct influence operations and avoid detection on its platforms.
  • "After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets. Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity," Meta said.
  • In a news bulletin, RT newsreader Eunan O'Neill said the broadcaster "and Russia as a whole denies the accusations that have been coming en masse against this channel and others in the past number of days".
  • The bans are expected to come into effect in the next few days.

Unione Europea:

(Reuters) Von der Leyen names new European Commission with focus on security, competitiveness + (POLITICO) Who works for whom in the new EU power structure

  • European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday named a new team to lead the European Union's most powerful institution for the next five years and tackle challenges to the region's security, competitiveness and growth.
  • Reversing the 27-nation bloc's lagging competitiveness, building up robust military manufacturing capacity and ensuring a fair transition to green energy will be key goals, the German conservative said.
  • Key appointments include Spain's Energy and Environment Minister Teresa Ribera as the bloc's new antitrust chief, whose job will be to rein in the power of Big Tech and ensure that the EU achieves its green goals.
  • Lithuania's Andrius Kubilius will be the EU's first defence commissioner, with the new role designed to build up military manufacturing capacity in the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine, next to the bloc's eastern border.
  • The European Commission wants to set up a fund to support strategic sectors, a document showed, helping it compete in new technologies, especially against China and the United States.
  • The EU's two biggest countries have top jobs. Von der Leyen is German, and France's outgoing foreign minister Stephane Sejourne will be in charge of the key industrial strategy portfolio.
  • Poland's nominee Piotr Serafin got the powerful job of overseeing the EU's budget.
  • Estonia's Kaja Kallas will be in charge of foreign policy. As Estonia's prime minister she has become one of the most vocal critics of neighbouring Russia among European leaders - and one of the staunchest supporters of Ukraine's bids to join the EU and NATO.
  • The EU's new energy commissioner, Denmark's Dan Jorgensen, will be charged with bringing down the EU's energy prices [...]
  • Slovakia's Maros Sefcovic will have the trade portfolio, the Netherlands' Wopke Hoekstra will tackle climate policies, Latvia's Valdis Dombrovskis will be in charge of the economy and Finland's Henna Virkkunen will oversee tech sovereignty, security and democracy.

Georgia:

(Reuters) Georgian parliament approves law curbing LGBT rights

  • Georgian lawmakers on Tuesday approved the third and final reading of a law on "family values and the protection of minors" that would impose sweeping curbs on LGBT rights.
  • The bill would provide a legal basis for authorities to outlaw Pride events and public displays of the LGBT rainbow flag, and to impose censorship of films and books.
  • Leaders of the governing Georgian Dream party say it is needed to safeguard traditional moral standards in Georgia, whose deeply conservative Orthodox Church is highly influential.
  • Tamara Jakeli, director of campaign group Tbilisi Pride, said the bill, which also restates an existing ban on same-sex marriage and bans gender reassignment surgery, would likely force her organisation to close its doors.

Politica internazionale

Nord America

USA:

(Reuters) Harris calls for end to war in Gaza, no Israeli reoccupation

  • U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris called on Tuesday for an end to the Israel-Gaza war and said that Israel must not reoccupy the Palestinian enclave once the nearly year-old conflict comes to an end.
  • Speaking in Philadelphia to the National Association of Black Journalists, she called for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants, a two-state solution and Middle East stability in a way that does not empower Iran.
  • Harris was asked about Springfield, Ohio, a city that for days has found itself at the center of a social media maelstrom after right-wing agitators latched onto false claims that Haitian arrivals were eating household pets.
  • Former President Donald Trump, Harris' Republican rival in the Nov. 5 presidential election, has pledged to conduct mass deportations of Haitian immigrants from Springfield if elected, even though the majority are in the United States legally.
