(Reuters) UN to demand Israel end 'unlawful' presence in Palestinian territories within 12 months

 
  • The United Nations General Assembly will on Wednesday adopt a Palestinian-drafted resolution that demands Israel end "its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory" within 12 months.
 
  • The action will isolate Israel days before world leaders travel to New York for their annual U.N. gathering. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to address the 193-member General Assembly on Sept. 26, the same day as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

  • A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Russia triggered an earthquake-sized blast at a major arsenal in the Tver region on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of a nearby town, war bloggers and some media reported.
 
  • Unverified video and images on social media showed a huge ball of flame blasting high into the night sky and multiple detonations thundering across a lake about 380 km (240 miles) west of Moscow.
 
  • NASA satellites picked up intense heat sources emanating from an area of about 14 square kilometres (5 square miles) at the site in the early hours and earthquake monitoring stations picked up what sensors thought was a small earthquake, opens new tab in the area.

(Reuters) Netherlands seeks to opt out of EU migration rules

 
  • The Netherlands' right-wing government said on Wednesday it had asked the EU for an opt-out on migration rules so it can implement a clamp-down on unwanted arrivals.
 
  • "I just informed @EU_commission that I want a migration opt-out for the Netherlands within Europe. We need to be in charge of our own asylum policy again!", migration minister Marjolein Faber said on social media platform X.
 
  • In power since July, the government led by Geert Wilders' nationalist PVV party, aims to declare a national asylum crisis, allowing it to implement controls without parliamentary approval.

  • Iranian hackers sent emails containing stolen material from Republican former President Donald Trump's campaign to people involved in Democratic President Joe Biden's then re-election campaign, part of an alleged broader effort by Tehran to influence the U.S. election, U.S. agencies said on Wednesday.
 
  • "Furthermore, Iranian malicious cyber actors have continued their efforts since June to send stolen, non-public material associated with former President Trump’s campaign to U.S. media organizations," the FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a joint statement.
 
  • In August, the United States accused Iran of launching cyber operations against the campaigns of both U.S. presidential candidates and targeting the American public with influence operations aimed at fanning political discord.

(Reuters) Hezbollah hand-held radios detonate across Lebanon, sources say

 
  • Hand-held radios used by Hezbollah detonated on Wednesday across Lebanon's south and in Beirut suburbs, further stoking tensions with Israel a day after similar explosions launched via the group's pagers.
 
  • Lebanon's health ministry said the initial casualty toll was one person killed and more than 100 injured. Earlier the state news agency said three people had died.
 
  • At least one of the blasts took place near a funeral organised by Iran-backed Hezbollah for those killed the previous day when thousands of pagers used by the group exploded across the country and wounded many of its fighters.

(Reuters) Japan says Chinese carrier entered its contiguous waters for first time

 
  • A Chinese aircraft carrier entered Japan's contiguous waters for the first time on Wednesday, Japan's defence ministry said, the latest in a string of military manoeuvres that has ratcheted up tensions between the neighbours.
 
  • The carrier, accompanied by two destroyers, sailed between Japan's southern Yonaguni and Iriomote islands, entering an area that extends up to 24 nautical miles from its coastline where Japan can exert some controls as defined by the United Nations.

(Associated Press) Algeria’s president sworn in for a second term after lopsided election

 
  • Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was sworn in on Tuesday for a second term after being elected in a landslide vote marred by apathy and questions around the vote count.
 
  • The ceremony to inaugurate Tebboune’s second five-year term took place at the People’s Palace, in Club-des-Pins, a seaside resort on the west coast of the capital, Algiers. Tebboune’s two challengers, Islamist Abdellali Hassan Cherif and Socialist Youcef Aouchiche attended the ceremony that came three days after Algeria’s constitutional court certified Tebboune’s landslide victory in the Sept. 7 elections.
 
  • The court announced on Saturday after a recounting of the vote that Tebboune and his two opponents had called into question.
