(Reuters) Ukraine seizes cargo ship, detains captain for exporting 'looted' grain

 
  • Ukraine seized a foreign cargo ship in the Black Sea off its Odesa region and detained the captain on suspicion of helping Moscow export Ukrainian grain from Russian-occupied Crimea, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said on Thursday.
 
  • The vessel, which it did not identify, was travelling under the flag of a central African country and repeatedly docked at the Crimean sea port of Sevastopol to pick up "looted" agricultural products in 2023-24, the SBU said.

(Reuters) Former Russian president Medvedev says Moscow should seek 'disappearance' of Ukraine and NATO

 
  • Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday denounced NATO's summit promise to grant eventual membership to Ukraine and said Russia should work towards the "disappearance" of both Ukraine and the military alliance.
 
  • He went on, in Russian: "The conclusion is obvious. We must do everything so that Ukraine's 'irreversible path' to NATO ends with either the disappearance of Ukraine or the disappearance of NATO. Or even better - the disappearance of both."

(Reuters) Biden welcomed Starmer's desire for closer EU ties, UK government says

 
  • U.S. President Joe Biden told Britain's new Prime Minister Keir Starmer that he welcomed his desire for closer ties with European counterparts, according to a UK government statement on Thursday.
 
  • Starmer met Biden in the White House's Oval Office on Wednesday where the two men discussed UK and U.S. ties, the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and England's soccer win in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

(Reuters) Rouen cathedral spire now clear of plume of smoke in French TV footage

 
  • In the latest images, smoke could still be seen through a gap in the white cover encircling the scaffolding around the spire but was no longer rising in a dark column.
 
  • A jewel of French mediaeval gothic architecture, the cathedral dates back to the 12th century and was repeatedly painted by impressionist artist Claude Monet in the 19th century, lifting its worldwide fame.
 
  • The local prefecture, which exercises state authority in the region, said the cathedral had been evacuated and emergency services were on the scene. A security cordon was in place around the building.

  • The United States will start deploying longer range missiles in Germany in 2026, the two countries announced at a meeting of the NATO alliance on Tuesday, a major step aimed at countering what the allies say is a growing threat Russia poses to Europe.
 
  • The decision will send Germany the most potent U.S. weapons to be based on the European continent since the Cold War, in a clear warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

  • China has accused NATO of seeking security at the expense of others and told the alliance not to bring the same “chaos” to Asia.
 
  • The statement from a Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Thursday came a day after NATO labelled China a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
 
  • “NATO agitating about China’s responsibility on the Ukraine issue is unreasonable and has sinister motives,” spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily briefing, maintaining that China has a fair and objective stance on the Ukraine issue.
 
  • “China urges NATO to ... stop interfering in China’s internal politics and smearing China’s image and not create chaos in the Asia-Pacific after creating turmoil in Europe”, Lin said.

(Reuters) South Korea to deploy 'StarWars' laser weapons targeting North Korean drones

 
  • South Korea will deploy laser weapons to shoot down North Korean drones this year, becoming the world's first country to deploy and operate such weapons in the military, the country's arms procurement agency said on Thursday.
 
  • South Korea has called its laser programme the "StarWars project".

(Reuters) Taiwan monitors Chinese military surge, calls China a threat to stability

 

Taiwan said on Thursday that it was closely watching the Chinese military, which it said posed a rising threat to the region, after a flurry of warplanes passed near the island to join drills with China's Shandong aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

 

The Chinese military exercises coincide with a NATO summit in Washington, where a draft communique says China has become a decisive enabler of Russia's war effort in Ukraine and Beijing continues to pose systemic challenges to Europe and to security.
