(Associated Press) Ukraine claims its drones hit a Russian oil facility, sparking a huge blaze

  • Ukraine claimed responsibility Tuesday for an overnight drone attack on a Russian oil facility that started a massive blaze in the latest long-range strike by Kyiv’s forces on a border region.
  • The attack set fire to an oil reservoir in Russia’s Rostov region and more than 200 firefighters were at the scene, according to Rostov Gov. Vasily Golubev.
  • The blaze covered an area of 5,000 square meters (55,000 square feet) but there were no casualties, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said.
  • A Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give the information to the media, said the attack was a special operation of Ukraine’s Security Service, known as SBU. The drones targeted two Rostov oil depots that have 22 oil reservoirs, the official said.

Russia

(Reuters) Putin vows to support North Korea against the United States

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed on Tuesday to deepen trade and security ties with North Korea and to support it against the United States, as he headed to the reclusive nuclear-armed country for the first time in 24 years.
  • North Korean state media also published articles praising Russia and supporting its military operations in Ukraine, calling them a "sacred war of all Russian citizens".
  • Moscow and Pyongyang have denied arms transfers but have vowed to boost military ties, possibly including joint drills.
  • Russia is due to outproduce the whole NATO military alliance on ammunition production this year, so Putin's trip is likely aimed at underscoring to Washington just how disruptive Moscow can be on a host of global crises.

(Reuters) Biden offers path to citizenship to spouses of US citizens

  • President Joe Biden announced one of the biggest legalization efforts in recent history on Tuesday offering a path to citizenship to hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the U.S. illegally who are married to U.S. citizens. The election year move contrasts sharply with his Republican rival Donald Trump's plan for mass deportations.
  • The program will be open to an estimated 500,000 spouses who have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years as of June 17, the White House and U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in statements on Tuesday. Some 50,000 children under age 21 with a U.S.-citizen parent also will be eligible.

(BBC) Russian warships leave Cuba after five days

  • The vessels, which included a nuclear-powered submarine and a frigate, had been anchored at Havana Bay - some 90 miles (145km) from the US state of Florida.
  • The US said it did not see the visit as a threat but added that it was monitoring the vessels closely. Following the fleet's arrival, the US docked a submarine, the USS Helena, at its Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba on Thursday. Locals waved Russian flags as the Russian vessels left on Monday.
  • Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel visited the frigate - part of the fleet - on Saturday and interacted with the sailors, according to a post by the president on X.
  • Cuba's foreign ministry said none of the vessels had nuclear arms on board, and the visit did not pose a threat to the region. But Russia's defense ministry said the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the Kazan submarine were both carriers of advanced weapons, including hypersonic missiles Zircon. They earlier conducted missile drills in the Atlantic.
