  • The U.S. secretary of state said Thursday that the United States will continue to press Israel to do more to spare humanitarian sites in the Gaza Strip, a day after an Israeli airstrike on a U.N. school complex sheltering displaced Palestinians killed 14 people, including six U.N. staffers.

  • Ukraine accused Russia on Thursday of using strategic bombers to strike a civilian grain vessel in a missile attack in Black Sea waters near NATO member Romania, escalating tensions between Moscow and the military alliance.

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the vessel carrying Ukrainian grain to Egypt had been hit overnight by a Russian missile just after it left Ukrainian territorial waters. There were no casualties, he said.

  • It was the first time a missile has struck a civilian vessel transporting grains at sea since the start of Moscow's invasion in February 2022.

  • Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov, who use the aliases Vovan and Lexus, have duped a number of Western politicians over the years into discussing topics of interest to Moscow. The duo, who have denied Western accusations of having links to Russia's intelligence services, were given a top state award in the Kremlin in July for their exploits.

  • Pawel Wronski, a spokesperson for the Polish foreign ministry, told Reuters the material had probably been gathered in March, and questioned whether and how it had been edited. He said Sikorski's comments were similar to things the minister had said many times to various politicians.

Stati Uniti:

(Associated Press) US House clears a largely bipartisan package of bills to counter China

  • The U.S. House this week approved a sweeping package of bills to counter China’s influence, shoring up a largely bipartisan push to ensure America comes out ahead in the competition between the world’s superpowers.

  • The efforts would ban Chinese-made drones, limit China-linked biotech companies from access to the U.S. market, strengthen sanctions and deepen ties with Asian countries. The campaign to target Beijing this week shows how curbing China’s power has emerged as a rare issue of political consensus.

  • But some measures did pass along party lines, with Republicans arguing the need to protect national security when it comes to everything from education to farmland, and Democrats raising concerns about discrimination. The advocacy group Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote also warned about “overly broad anti-China rhetoric.”
